Thirty Nine years

•  In 1984, a small group of friends wanted to break down the barriers that existed between their homeless brothers and sisters and the community at large. For this purpose and to get to know them better, they began rounds in Santurce on Mondays and Thursdays, giving out soup, bread and fruit in their cars. 

• They founded and incorporated the organization into the Department of State in December 1985, and in June 1986 they rented and remodeled a building formerly known as the "Venus Bar," located at stop 16½. The facilities were inaugurated with a Eucharistic celebration in October 1986. 

• To provide a welcoming, friendly and Christian environment that would make it easier for volunteers to make community with the homeless, the facilities were prepped to offer breakfast, lunch, showers, clothes, laundry service, barber shop, etc. La Fondita de Jesús became the first private non-profit organization to offer this type of service to the homeless in San Juan.

• The organization continued to grow its body of volunteers, participants, and services, and was forced to find a larger location. In 1991 they rented a place on Monserrate Street, El Gandul Community, in Santurce.

• In March 2009 an expansion was completed with ample spaces to fraternize and improve the flow of services, which has allowed more people to be served.

• La Fondita de Jesús has been a pioneer in raising awareness of the problems that affect the homeless, and is an instrument of communication with government agencies and the legislature, so that the public policy necessary for their well-being is developed and implemented.
